ART235 Project 03: PSA Poster Campaign
For this project, we selected a cause for which we would like to create a Public Service campaign to bring attention to the issue and a call to action to encourage people to make a needed change. This campaign consisted of three related posters with a cohesive design style so that they work both together and separately. We studied our chosen cause to better understand the issue and what change could have a positive effect. We studied successful PSA campaigns to inform our choices as well.
For my project, I chose a Iocal issue that is relevant to where I live. The area of Virginia where I live is very near the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Chesapeake Bay which is a large shipping channel. There has been a growning problem with whales washing up dead on the beaches. These deaths have increased signifcantly since 2016. Through my research I learned that due to successful conservation efforts for the fish that whales feed on, these whales are spending more time in the shallower waters of these shipping channels and are more likely to be struck by ships. All that is needed to greately reduce the number of ship strikes is for these ships to lower their speed to 10 knots in designated areas to give the whales enough time to move out of the way.
My designs try to mimic signs one would see driving around that provide quick and easy to understand warnings of what may be ahead. Using eye catching bright colors and simple silhouettes to convey meaning quickly.
